Modern and relatable, it could take place anywhere in the world at any time.

Few operas are as well-known and beloved as La Traviata, effectively the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of the opera repertoire.

Giuseppe Verdi's music is combined with Francesco Maria Piave's powerful libretto. This raw, honest, and moving tale of an impossible love between Alfredo and the frivolous, tuberculosis-stricken Violetta is so modern and relatable that it could unfold anywhere in the world at any time. This makes it a universal blockbuster.

Moreover, it's an intimate story that unfolds in the confines of a metaphorical square meter. Historically performed in grand opera houses, the more intimate and simpler versions of recent years have left the greatest impact.

The Ukraine Chamber Opera presents an intimate and scaled-down version of the opera, with no barrier between the performers and the audience—the audience is right there, close up. Despite the smaller setting, the form remains authentic. The opera includes all the audience favorites like "Libiamo," "Sempre libera," and "Parigi o cara."

Saturday, November 30, at the Wilmink Theater in Enschede: La Traviata.

The Story

What makes this production particularly special is the collaboration with passionate singers from Ukraine, for whom this story of coercion, obligation, and loss holds extra significance. The Ukrainian Chamber Opera is composed of top soloists from various Ukrainian opera houses who have united to continue their work beyond their homeland. Several of these soloists have previously performed in the Netherlands with the Kharkiv City Opera, the Kharkiv State Opera, or the Opera of Dnipro.

The ill-fated lovers Violetta and Alfredo will be portrayed by Marianna Tsvietinska and Maxime Vorocheck. These two soloists from the Lviv Opera have achieved great success in these roles in other productions. During this tour, Marianna will be alternated with Maria Knihnytska, who hails from Odessa and performs as a soloist at the San Carlo Opera in Naples. The role of the father, Giorgio Germont, will be sung by Olexander Forkushak, a familiar face at many opera houses across Europe.

The direction is in the hands of Marc Krone, who has earned his reputation with productions such as Aïda and Pearl Fishers with the Kharkiv Opera. The musical direction is led by Jeroen Weierink, who has traveled with various Ukrainian opera productions (including La Traviata, Tosca, Pearl Fishers, Aïda, and Nabucco) across the Benelux. La Traviata marks another collaboration between these two gentlemen, promising a dynamic performance.
